We're going to start the year by building a Community of Writers. Our first genre is Narrative.

We'll start by building the strong foundation for our base ten number system. We are halfway through Module 1 and have just started subtraction as a way of finding the unknown part.

We'll start with Shared and Independent Reading. Small groups will begin later working towards a goal of Independent Reading Level I or beyond by the end of the year.

We'll start with observations of the nature in our community. We've been observing rye grass and alfalfa seeds growing in class. These are going home today.

Coming soon: Our first big FIELD TRIP!!! We are going to Berkeley on Tuesday, October 16th, to see a bilingual performance of The Cat in the Hat. This will involve public transportation, so we'll need 5 brave parents to join us and make sure kids get on and off the right bus and BART trains. More information will be going home next week. Please let me know if you'd like to join us.

Today we did a directed drawing of the dragon kite from the book Dragon Kite of the Autumn Moon. They turned out great! See the proud artists below with their drawings.

If you are interested in learning more about the Toolbox, there is a free parent webinar on October 11th at 6pm. Click here for more information and registration.

Field trips...

Bay Area Discovery Museum

I have booked a trip to Berkeley on October 16 to see a Cat in the Hat performance. I realized too late that this was the day before the Walkathon. If you want to chaperone the field trip, you will need to be fingerprinted. Walkathon helpers don't have to be. I hope you can help out with one or the other of these fun events.

We always need parents for field trips! I will let you know as far ahead of time as possible, though Walking Field trips often have a shorter lead time.
